JAMES WALDROP, Abt. 1730-Abt. 1772 |
| Our journey through the genealogy of James Waldrop begins in Amelia Co., VA in 1754. He was an adult in 1754 when he and what we believe to be his brother, John Waldrop appeared on the Tax List of Amelia Co., VA. In 1759, John and James Waldrop bought 100 acres from Thomas Green on Horsepen Branch of Wintokomake Creek. They were both on the tithe lists of Amelia Co., VA through 1763. In 1764, James and John sold the 100 acres they owned to Henry Anderson. Then next year, 1765, John and James Waldrop were sued by Thomas Dillard in Halifax Co., VA. Several lawsuits followed over the next few years. When Pittsylvania Co., VA was created out of Halifax Co., James and John Waldrop bought 100 acres from James Dillard. James died in Pittsylvania Co., VA in 1772. His will named his wife, Sarah and one son, James. When John Waldrop sold his Pittsylvania Co., VA land in 1778, one of the boundry's mentioned was that of James Waldrop, deceased. This indicates to us that James' wife and son were still living in Pittsylvania Co. in 1778.
U V Waldrop became a member of the Sons of the Revolution by proving he was a descendant of James Waldrop, the son of this James. He related a story told him by his Grandfather. - My grandfather told me this James and two brothers were deported from Ireland in the 1700's for not signing the pledge of allegiance to Ireland. They had to agree to work for a person seven years before they could get off the boat. This James was supposed to have worked his seven years in Sumter Co., SC. I haven't been able to verify this. The first records of him is in Virginia...My grandfather stated the other two boys were John Waldrop and David Waldrop. It is assumed this John and the one that signed the will were his brothers. My grandfather told me one went to Tn, which this John Waldrop did. He told me David went to Virginia and was a school Master. He got into trouble with the school system and was dismissed. The family never heard from him again. This David in Virginia was dismissed from the School System for writing back to the press in Ireland saying bad things about the American Colonies. The John Waldrop & David Waldrop must have gotten some education here in America as they could both sign their names. Our James Waldrop couldn't sign his name. The David Waldrop was married twice and left a large estate to his wife in Virginia with no mention of children. Our Waldrop DNA participant from this family matches the descendants of Luke and Michael Waldrop of SC. It is generally thought that Luke and Michael came here from Scotland. We know U V's grandfather erred on some of his facts. This may have been one of them, or researchers of Luke and Michael may have erred attempting to connect them to Sir William Wardroper. 1759 --- Amelia Co., VA. Deed Book 7, page 9. 4 May 1759.
